This is a Model 1961 canteen used by the United State military from the early 1960's through the present. This one quart canteen was an experimental model was introduced in the Army inventory in September of 1962. It was extensively field tested in Vietnam and a field report from August of 1965 highly approved of it and recommended that all units deployed in combat be issued them. The Army gradually replaced the steel and aluminum canteens still in the supply system all the way through 1972. At that point all remaining WWII era canteens were required to be turned in. The new canteen system consisted of the 1 quart plastic canteen, steel canteen cup and a new nylon canteen cover. The canteen was shaped much as the same as the M1910 used from WWI on. Instead of a chain to retain the cap, a broad plastic strap was used. The canteen cup was retained out of necessity, as the plastic canteen cannot be used with fire or intense heat. The cover was attached to the M1956 pistol belt by ALICE clips. With the advent of the M17A1 protective mask a new cap was issued to allow the soldier to drink while wearing the protective mask. This canteen has the cap that is not modified. The bottom of the canteen is embossed with US/ date of 1992 and the makers name, SONETRONICS.
