This is a souvenir badge from the 1897 Tennessee Centennial & International Exposition that was held in Nashville, Tennessee. The event took place from 1 May through 31 October, 1897 in what is today know as Centennial Park. The expo site covered about 200 acres and featured over 100 buildings. Many of them were devoted to agriculture, commerce, education, fine arts, history, machinery, forestry, minerals, and transportation. Total attendance for the six month exposition was 1, 786, 714. These small souvenir badges were made by Schwaab S & S Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The badge consists of a header with a pin back on the reverse and a medallion suspended by two small brass loops. On the front of the header is the word SOUVENIR, with scroll work along the top and sides. The medallion reads TENNESSEE at the top, with scroll work all around the perimeter, the months MAY and OCT within arcs at an angle below TENNESSEE and the year 18 97on the edges of the scroll work. Two circular rings are in the center of the medallion, with CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION NASHVILLE in raised lettering within the rings. In the very center of the medallion are the Tennessee state seal symbols of agriculture and commerce. This souvenir badge has a medium chocolate patina to it. On the revesre side of the medallion is the makers mark of the Schwaab Company. The badge is pinned to a small piece of unlined paper with a statement that reads in cursive ink, "A souvenir of the Centennial Exposition of 1897. I always understood that moma and dad attended it." This is a cool like piece of Tennessee history, not military related, but still very collectible.
