This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 81641 puts this one in the production year of 1857. It is possible this revolver was in the south before the outbreak of the Civil War, as there are no martial marks or cartouches on the gun. The 7 1/2" barrel has very strong rifling and a bright clean bore. The single line ADDRESS SAMl COLT HARTFORD CT address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is very legible, but the cylinder scene has been worn pretty thin! After 164 years of use I guess I'd be a little worn too! The sub inspectors stamps of L, M and T are found on the trigger guard and barrel. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, including that dang little wedge. The barrel, cylinder and frame have some bluing remaining, but have for the most part taken on a very nice plum patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. The silver wash is completely worn off of this one. The brass has a soft golden patina, very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have very little of the original varnish remaining, but have a great look to them. They fit the gun like a glove, with the right grip having a small piece of wood replaced at the frame. This is a beautiful gun that could have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection.
