This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 13803 puts this one in the production year of 1852. It is possible this revolver was in the south before the outbreak of the Civil War, as there are no martial marks or cartouches on the gun. The 7 1/2" barrel has very strong rifling and a bright clean bore. The single line ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW YORK CITY address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is still legible, but is a little worn. The cylinder scene is still very crisp and clear! The sub inspectors stamp of L is found on the trigger guard, along with S on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The letter X is also stamped on the bottom of the trigger guard. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, including that dang little wedge. It looks that this old six shooter may have come from the factory nickel plated, as the barrel, cylinder, loading lever and frame have some nickel finish remaining, but have for the most part taken on a very nice plum patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. Traces of the original silver wash are still visible on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a dark mustard patina that is very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have the majority of the original varnish remaining, the only bumps and dings being on the bottom of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, and have no repairs. This is a beautiful gun that could have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection, or your Colt revolver collection.
