This is a rifleman's bag with cow horn powder flask and side knife from the American Revolutionary War period. This type of bag was utilized more by militia men than Continental troops. The two section bag is made of leather and uses a 1" wide black leather strap to be worn over the shoulder. The outer section measures 6 3/4" tall and 7 1/2" wide. The outer section is 6" tall and 7 1/2" wide. There is some definite wear to the bag, but both sections remain remarkably supple and pliable. The outer section has a flap that is still securely attached. The bottom and sides have no holes. The inner section looks to have had a flap also, but it is no longer with the pouch. There is also a hole in the back of the inner section, roughly 1 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" long. The inner or outer sections show no signs of repair at all. This would have been used to carry the rifleman's shot bag, patch material, spare flints, cleaning materials for the gun, bullet mold, lead and melting pot, a powder measure and any gun tools he used. There is one iron buckle on the leather shoulder strap. The leather strap is a little on the fragile side at the point that would have been atop the shoulder, but it is still 100% intact. The powder flask is made from a cow horn. The horn measures approximately 9 1/2" in length, 2 1/2" across the butte plug and 1/2" across the spout. The horn has aged nicely and shows no cracks or splits. The butte plug is held secure with brass pins and utilizes a brass pin, iron pin and two iron staples to to attach the leather suspension straps to the horn. The other ends of the suspension straps are stitched to the shoulder strap. The spout plug is reporting for duty. A leather scabbard has been stitched to one side of the shoulder strap. The scabbard remains in very good condition with all stitching being strong and unbroken. The side knife measure 11 1/4" in overall length, with a 6 3/4" blade. The turned wooden handle shows plenty of wear and has a glass smooth texture. There are three incised lines on the handle that look like they've been drawn on, but are actual cuts that have been worn smooth. A shallow age crack is one one side and runs approximately 2 1/2". An iron ferrule is between the handle and the swept back iron guard. The spear point style blade is tapered, being narrow at the guard and flaring out towards the tip. a ridge is clearly visible in the center of the blade on both sides. This rifleman's bag with horn and knife came out of North Carolina, and has survived the past 220 plus years in remarkable condition. If you are a serious Rev war collector, you need to give this a serious look.
