Harper's Weekly Illustration of Major General Joseph Hooker
Item #: WR383
This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering Major General Joseph Hooker. Hooker was a career military man, graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1837. He resigned from the Army in 1853 after losing face with then commander General Winfield Scott. When the Civil War broke out, Hooker was given a commission after the First Battle of Bull Run. He was an aggressive combat leader, and was successful at the Division and Corps level. He was promoted to command the entire Army of the Potomac, where he met his end at the hands of Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville. He served in the Seminole War and the Mexican American War as well as the Civil War. The illustration measures 9 3/4" wide and 11 1/4" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The black and white illustration shows a bust of Hooker facing to the right in his Major General's uniform. If you collect Civil War or Indian War documents this piece will fit right in!
