This is a US Model 1910 entrenching tool manufactured for use during World War I. These entrenching tools were initially introduced to the Army system in 1910 and used during WWI and into WWII. This E-tool measures 22"in length and is 6 3/4" at the widest part. During WWI the only stamps on the shovel were the US marks, there was no maker or date stamped on it. The shovels were not painted, but left in their natural condition. This shovel is stamped U.S. on the shovel head and on the wooden handle. The metal components of this shovel have been painted OD, but the wooden handle has never seen paint. It is very possible that this one was painted for reissue during the early days of WWWII. These little implements helped many an infantryman become soil experts both in the European and Pacific theaters! If you have a US WWII Infantry collection it isn't complete without one of these.
