This book was compiled and edited by S. E. Smith, published in 1969, the narrative is 967 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos and drawings. This is a fine book, that has long been out of print, but is worthy of being reprinted. The book is an anthology of over 100 pieces of Marine WWII history, compiled and edited by S.E. Smith. The individual pieces were written by journalists such as Ernie Pyle, John Hersey and Hanson Baldwin, historians/authors including Walter Lord and John Toland, Generals Douglas MacArthur, Holland M. Smith, Alexander Vandergrift, Admirals Chester Nimitz and William Halsey, famous fighters like Greg (Pappy) Boyington, Captain Joe Foss and Colonel James Devereux and lower ranking marines who went on to write important histories of the Marine Corps fighting in WWII, such as Richard Tregaskis, Robert Leckie and Richard Wheeler. The submissions cover only the American side of the fighting, as there are no submissions from the Japanese side. There are numerous maps and photographs that tie the individual pieces together and give an overall picture of the fighting. The overall quality of the writing is superb and this is definitely a must have for anyone seriously interested in the history of WWII, especially that of the Marine Corps. This hard back book is in fair condition, with a dust jacket that is in bad condition.
