WWI Propeller Picture Frame

This is a section of a WWI wooden propeller used on aircraft during WWI. Since the United States received the majority of it's aircraft from France, this is probably a prop for a Nieuport 17 or possibly a Spad 7. The wood is mahogany, as most propellers used during WWI were. This section of the tip of the blade measures 13 1/8" long and 9" at the widest point. It has been turned into a picture frame by some enterprising American in an aviation unit either during WWI or during the occupation afterwards. Hand carved into the front of the propeller is the American insignia of a WWI aviator, a single blade propeller with wings extending from the either side. Carved below and to each side of the bottom of the prop are the dates 1918 and 1919. An oval hole has been cut into the center of the propeller that measures 5" long and 3 1/8" wide. On either side of the opening are hand carved laurel branches that have been painted green. At the bottom of the opening a ribbon or bow has been carved and outlined in red. Below the ribbon are the letters A.E.F., standing for Allied Expeditionary Force. Inside the opening is a French postcard with a black and white photo of the Eifel Tower. The image is of the WWI time period. As a backer to the postcard, a piece of card board has also been cut to fit in the oval. It has the Shapleigh Diamond Edge logo on it, a log that was established in 1918. Shapleigh made wood working tools, most prominent were their planes. Seems perfectly logical the ground crews would have had these tools around, since they were working on wooden and canvas aircraft. This little piece of aviation history was most likely crafted by a young American in the aviation support role to send home as a souvenir of his time in France. It's a cool piece to look at, and will really spruce up any WWI aviation collection.
