This is a Model 1941 field jacket used by the US Army and Marine Corps during World War II. The M1941 jacket, commonly referred to as the "Parsons" jacket, was introduced into the supply system in 1940 and became a part of the standard combat uniform for the Army and Marine Corps through the end of WWII. The design of the jacket was based on the recommendations of Major General James Parsons. It was hip length, loose fitting and designed to provide freedom of movement. They were made of tightly woven, wind resistant olive drab cotton poplin and lined with a thin wool flannel cloth. While it was very comfortable, the jacket was not suitable as a winter jacket due to it's light weight and design shortcomings. It was to be replaced by the 1943 field jacket, but remained in service through WWII. This Model 1941 field jacket is in good condition, but shows plenty of evidence of use. There are no moth holes or stains on the coat, but it does have a couple of small holes here and there. The patch of the 82nd Airborne Division is still securely sewn on the left sleeve, as well as Sergeant chevrons sewn on each sleeve. All buttons on the jacket are present. The Quartermaster tag is missing, but the size tag is present and shows this jacket to be a 34 Regular. The area of the collar that would be in contact with the wearers neck shows plenty of wear, and the fabric is split open in that area. The pocket openings also show evidence of wear, with the forward edges of the opening being worn and frayed. There is evidence of period repairs at both cuff edges. I can find no identification anywhere on the jacket. The Talon zipper still zips all the way up and down flawlessly. This P41 Parson's jacket definitely has the look of having been there and done that, and will make a fine addition to your WWII 82nd Airborne collection!
