Harper's Ferry Model 1795 Type IV Musket

This is a Model 1795 type IV Flintlock .69 caliber smooth bore musket manufactured by the Harpers Ferry Armory. The Model 1795 was the first musket produced in the US, based on the Charleville musket of France. The Charleville Model 1763/1766 had been imported in large numbers during the American Revolution for use by the Continental Army. This Model 1795 measures 57 3/4" overall, with a 41 3/4" barrel. The barrel on this smooth bore gages out at .75 caliber, apparently it did some shootin! The bore is turning dark, but is not rusty or heavily pitted. The exterior of the barrel is smooth and has an untouched black patina. The bayonet lug is on the top of the barrel, indicating a later production. There are several marking on the barrel, three ovals on the left side by the breech. They are very faint, but one is a US mark, the other is an eagle head and the third I can't make out. All three barrel bands have the same black patina, with the top band being a double strap with front sight. Both sling swivels are still reporting for duty. The lock plate is marked HARPERS/FERRY/1817 behind the hammer and an American Eagle over US forward of the hammer. The lock plate, hammer and frizzen all have the same dark patina as the rest of the iron hardware. The action works flawlessly and spark occurs when the flint strikes. The trigger guard and butt plate match the patina of the barrel, it's pretty obvious this old war horse has been together for 204 years. The finials on the trigger guard are round in shape. The steel button head ramrod still is correct for this gun, matches the patina of the rest of the gun, but is 3" short. The walnut stock is in really good condition to be over 200 years old! The normal bumps and dings are present from handling. There is a small piece of wood missing from the right side just above the hammer. There is a set of inspector initials stamped on the left stock flat opposite the lock. The initials JS represent James Stubblefield, a Harper's Ferry inspector from 1807 to 1821. This smooth bore long gun could have seen service in the First Seminole War, the Mexican American War and possibly right on to the Civil War.
