This is a Smith and Wesson Model #1 2nd issue .22 caliber revolver. Approximately 117,000 of these revolvers were manufactured by Smith & Wesson between 1860 and 1868. The serial # 0f 64020 puts this one being manufactured during the Civil War period. The serial number stamped on the inside of the right grip matches that on the bottom of the back strap. This little pocket pistol measures 7" in overall length, with a barrel length of 3 3/16". The top of the barrel is stamped Smith and Wesson Springfield Mass. The sights are fixed. This 7 shot revolver has a spur trigger. The non fluted cylinder is stamped "PATENTED APRIL 3 1855, JULY 5 1859 & DEC18 1860". The gun was originally silver plated, but the majority of the plating has worn off the brass frame, leaving the brass with a nice golden patina. The cylinder and barrel now display a silverish/gray patina. The rosewood grips are in good condition with no cracks. The mechanics of this little firearm operate normally. There are numerous Civil War period images with officers of both sides holding these firearms. This one will add to any Civil War pistol collection.
