Item #: WR424

This is a US Model 1874 curb bit designed by Captain William Shoemaker. Captain Shoemaker wanted to design a bit for Cavalry horses that was lighter than the standard Model 1859 and more humane to the horses. The US Cavalry used these bits from 1874 through 1901. This would be considered a medium port bit, it measures 8" in length, and 5 1/4" in width. The bit exhibits some light surface rust, but still retains much of the original finish. The slobber bar and rein rings are present, as well as both brass US bosses on the side branches. The bit is very tight and retains it's original shape. This bit will make a fine addition to Indian Wars Cavalry collection.
