This is a US Model 1943 entrenching tool with carrier from World War II. These entrenching tools were made to replace the fixed length Model 1910 shovel that was standard issue. This E-tool measures 20 3/4" when folded for storage or carrying and 27 3/4" when unfolded and locked in the spade position. The spade is 6 1/4" at the widest part. The aluminum nut allowed the soldier to lock the spade in three positions, folded for carry, fully extended to be used as a shovel and putting the spade in a 90% position to be used as a pick, hoe or even a weapon. The entire tool was painted OD Green. The wooden handle on this one has long since lost all that color. The spade still retains some of the original paint, mainly on the front side on the upper section. The spade is stamped in three lines, US/AM??/194?. This is most likely an Ames product, the same company that made swords during the Civil War produced it! The canvas carrier is in good condition. It shows honest wear from use, but is undamaged. The closure snap works fine, and the bail for attaching the tool to a pack or web belt is still present. All stitching remains tight and strong. This one is stamped on the inside of the flap CARRIER, SHOVEL, ENTRENCHING/M 1943/STOCK NO. 74-C-107 and AVERY 1945. These little implements helped many an infantryman become soil experts both in the European and Pacific theaters! If you have a US WWII Infantry collection it isn't complete without one of these.
