This is a US wool overcoat issued to the enlisted men during World War II. This overcoat, known as the Melton roll collar, originally developed in 1927, is a late war version. It is a size 38L, and is in very good, original condition. The buttons on these wool overcoats were originally WWI blackened brass, then evolved into the standard brass buttons. In 1942 the buttons used on the overcoat were made of plastic. This version of the coat was introduced in late 1944, as evidenced by the single, large plastic button on the inner right side of the coat. The button was used to fasten the overlapping layers of the coat from the inside. The coat itself is free of stains or rips. There is one small moth hole in the left breast, almost directly below the top button. There is another small moth hole on the bottom right of the overcoat. The stitching is very strong though out the overcoat. Only one button is not sewn on, and it was found in the right pocket. There are no patches or insignia any where on the overcoat. Written in ink on the right inside liner is the name Joel Hammer. No research has been done to determine who this might be. There are numerous photos of WWII GI's wearing these overcoats in the European theater, especially during the winter of 1944. This Melton overcoat would look great in a Battle of the Bulge display.
