Model 1872 Enlisted Mans Kepi
Item #: WR437
This is a Model 1872 enlisted kepi from the Indian Wars period. The blue wool is in excellent condition with no mothing. A 1 1/4" sweatband is completely intact. All stitching is strong throughout the kepi. The two general service buttons are two piece design and have a G.F. FOSTER SON & CO CHICAGO back mark. The black leather chin strap, black tarred visor and brown leather sweatband are in remarkable condition. There is a makers label in the top of the kepi, that of George F Foster of Chicago, Illinois. Foster became involved with the military goods business in 1873 and continued on into 1904. During the 1880's and 90's they were listed as suppliers of the US Army and National Guard for uniforms, headgear, swords and all other military equipment. The 1/4" high bullion letters US on the front of the kepi make me think this one was made for the National Guard. If you have an Indian Wars collection and are missing a kepi, this one needs to fill that void!
