This is a fighting knife designed and manufactured by P. D. Henry of Birmingham, Alabama during World War II. Henry was in the scrap metal business during the war, made knives from salvage metal and sold them to the military. This knife has an aluminum handle and a double edged blade made from a file. The knife has an overall length of 14", with a blade length of 9 1/4". It utilizes the design of a double edged dagger blade that can be used for thrusting and slashing strokes. The hilt is made of cast aluminum. The hand grip of the hilt has serrations cut into it. The spikes were intended to inflict damage on any enemy combatant during hand to hand fighting. A guard was cast into the hilt to protect the soldiers hand during close in fighting. The blade has a steel gray patina, with dark aged spots scattered about. The leather scabbard was also made by Henry. The thick, russet colored leather is in very good condition. The loop of the scabbard is big enough to have been worn on a pistol belt. The leather shows wear from use, but is not cracked, torn or crazed anywhere. The snap, rivets and stitching are all secure and unbroken. A knife like this one is pictured on page 52 of Bill Wright's book, "Theater Made Military Knives of WWII." If you collect fighting knives, this a very rare one that one will add some pop to your collection.
