Vietnam Era M1 Helmet
Item #: WR449

This is a US Vietnam era M1 helmet and liner. The helmet has a visible heat stamp of 59, with the size of the numbers the same as used during WWII. I believe this is a stamp of RJ Stampings of Canada. They produced almost two million M1 shells between 1970 and 1977. This one is painted the lighter shade of green, as opposed to the dark shade found on WWII examples. The inside of the helmet is painted the same light green from the Vietnam era. I believe this is the original paint. The exterior has a light sand texture applied to it. The helmet shell is dent free. The stainless steel band around the rim retains all of the original paint. The rim has a rear seam stainless steel band. The chin strap bails are swivel. The chin straps are the correct T1 ball and hook type. The liner is from the post WWII era. The makers stamp is M27, but I have not been able to identify that stamp yet. The liner still has the original coat of paint on the exterior, the interior is unpainted. The liner is not complete, missing the nape strap. The suspension cloth is cotton and correct for the Vietnam period. The sweatband is complete and shows staining from wear. The DSA stamp dates this one to 1974. This is an example of an M1 combat helmet from Vietnam era and saw service all the way into the 1980's, when it was replaced by the Kevlar helmet.
