This is a set of four postal cards addressed to Captain John C Jackson of Rover, Tennessee. When the Civil War broke out Jackson organized Company A, 24th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. That company was mustered into service on 24 August, 1861 at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee. Jackson resigned from his command to join a new Cavalry unit being organized at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In September of 1862 Captain John Childress Jackson became a member of Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Escort Company. Jackson would serve with Forrest's Escort company for the remainder of the war. He would take command of the company when Captain Montgomery Little was killed at Thompson's Station, Tennessee on 5 March, 1863. Jackson would be wounded in multiple engagements, once severely in the face, a wound that would plague him for the rest of his life. Jackson survived the war, still in command of the Escort Company when it was surrendered on 4 May, 1865 at Citronelle, Alabama. They were paroled on 9 May, 1865 at Gainesville, Alabama. Captain Jackson returned to Bedford County, Tennessee and took up farming. He lived to the age of 69 years, dying in Versailles, Tennessee on 10 April, 1898. Three of the four cards are to invite the Captain to reunions and one is an invitation to decorate the graves of fallen Confederate soldiers buried in the Shelbyville, Tennessee area. The first card reads, "Captain John Jackson you are cordially invited to attend the Reunion of the First Tennessee Regiment at the Fair Grounds, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee on the 9th of October, 1885." The second card reads, "Lynchburg Tenn., Aug 3 1886 Dear sir: The next annual reunion of the Gen. N.B. Forrest's Staff and Escort will be held at Lynchburg Tenn. on the First Thursday in Sept., next. Please notify the Corresponding Secretary of your intention to attend? Remit your annual DUES 50cts. Respectfully, J.N. Taylor Cor. Sec.,y." The front of this card has a Lynchburg postal cancellation stamp and is addressed Capt J. C. Jackson/ Rover Tenn Bedford Co. The third card reads "Shelbyville, Tenn., May 12th, 1890 COMRADE: You are earnestly requested to be present to assist in decorating the graves of our dead heroes next Saturday, may 17. We meet in the County Court room about 10 o'clock, a.m. Come and bring your families and all the flowers you can. Services at the cemetery at 11 o'clock. Deliver all flowers to the Committee at the County Court room. WILL. J. MUSE, Corresponding Sec'y." The front of this card has a Shelbyville postal cancellation stamp and is addressed J. C. Jackson Rover Tenn. The fourth card reads "Lynchburg, Tennessee, Sept. 11, 1896. Dear Comrade; The 16th Annual Reunion of Lieut. Gen. N. B. Forrest Staff and Escort will be held on Tuesday, OCTOBER 13, 1896 at Belle mead, the home of maj. Gen. W. H. Jackson, near Nashville, Tenn. Take our notice and govern yourselves accordingly. Fraternally, J. N. Taylor. Cor Sec." The front of this card has a postal cancellation stamp but I can't make out from where. It is addressed Capt J. C. Jackson Rover Tenn Bedford Co. These cards are rare in themselves, but to be addressed to the commander of Forrest's Escort Company makes them exceptionally rare. If you are a UCV collector or Forrest's Cavalry Corps collector, these could be the centerpiece of your collection.
