Identified Confederate Cabinet Card Image
Item #: WR456
This is a cabinet card of a charcoal drawing of Private J. N. Bright taken in Jackson, Tennessee circa 1880's - 1890's. The image measures 4 1/4" wide by 5 3/4" tall. It is on a cardboard backer that measures 4 1/4" wide by 6 1/2" tall. The top corners of the image are rounded off, along with the top corners of the cardboard. The bottom corner of the image are square, with the bottom corners of the backer rounded off. There is no damage to the image, a slight discoloration on the upper right of the back of the cardboard. The image is a photograph taken of a charcoal drawing done of Bright while in the Confederate Army. He is wearing a shell jacket with what appears to be plain buttons. Bright is clean shaven, bright eyed and looks to be in his late teens, at most early twenties. Neatly written to the right of Bright in cursive is J N Bright 1864 Co K 12th Regt Forrest's Cavalry CSA. I believe the artist's initials are below the writing. Charcoal drawings became popular about the same time as the cabinet cards. So I believe the 1864 date refers to the time period when Private Bright was in uniform, not when the picture was drawn. I suspect that this charcoal drawing was done from an ambrotype, somewhere in the late 1800's. The studio's name and location are stamped on the back of the cardboard backer, "McClintock & Harper/Photographers/Jackson, Tenn. An old newspaper advertisement from the Bolivar Bulletin announces the opening of this gallery at the corner of Jackson and Main Streets and is dated 16 December, 1887. A quick check of the Civil War Research Database shows a J.C. Bright of K company, 12th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. He enlisted on 14 February, 1863. This is a very nice late 1800's image of a charcoal drawing of a Confederate Tennessee Cavalryman, mostly likely made from a wartime image of that young man.
