This is a US Model 1910 canteen manufactured during WWI, but due to the paint I am unable to identify the maker. This canteen is in issued condition, having a few dents and dings! It has been painted with US naval ships paint sometime during the WWII period. The cap is made of aluminum and still has the cork seal. A retaining chain is riveted to the top of the cap and attached to a retaining ring at the neck of the canteen. The canteen cup is also of WWI vintage. It shows honest use, having a ding or two. The bottom of the cup is stamped in three lines, U.S./L.F.& C./1918. The cup also a list of ships and campaigns engraved on it, along with some personal decorations. This is a wartime record of Private First Class Richard William Shorter, United States Marine Corps. Shorter was born in Gainesville, Texas on 23 September, 1924. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 24 March, 1942, served through the end of the war and was discharged on 23 March, 1946. Richard Shorter dies at the age of 66 on 1 September, 1990 and is buried in Pueblo, Colorado. In April, 1942 Private Shorter was part of the 5th Recruit Battalion, Recruit Depot in San Diego during boot camp. Marine Corp muster rolls show Shorter assigned to the Special Weapons Group, 3rd Defense Battalion, Fleet Marine Force. In April of 1943 he is shown as a Private First Class, still with the Special Weapons Group, 3rd Defense Battalion. October 1943 PFC Shorter is no longer listed with the Special Weapons Group, but is still assigned to the 3rd Defense Battalion. Muster rolls from July, 1944 have PFC Shorter assigned to the 3rd Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion, FMF. In October, 1944 PFC Shorter is listed as being assigned to the Infantry Demonstration Company, Infantry School Battalion, Schools Regiment, Marine Corp Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. He remained with the Infantry Demonstration Company until Jul, 1945 when he was assigned to the 65th Replacement. He is shown as part of the Marine Detachment Provisional, Naval Operations Base, Okinawa in October of 1945. His last assignment shows him with the 18th Separate Military Police Company, Fleet Marine Force, San Francisco, California in January, 1946. Shorter sure got around during his four years with the Marine Corps! Maybe that's why he kept this record inscribed on his canteen cup. The side away from the handle is inscribed R W Shorter. Under his name are different locations he served during the war, Honolulu, Fiji IS, Tulagi, Guadalcanal, New Zealand, Bougainville, and what looks to be Saipan. Beside the campaign names are a list of troop ships he was on, the USS Arthur Middleton, USS Zeilin, USS Climer (Clymer), Crescent City and Titania. That's a fairly impressive record for an 18 year old Private in 1942, and four years later finally went home after traveling the Pacific for four years, three of them in combat. This model canteen saw service in WWI, WWII and the Korean wars. It's a nice little piece for the beginning collector.
