This is an authentic Federal Regulation Light Artillery Shell jacket from the Civil War period. This shell jacket is in very good condition, and exhibits both hand stitching and machine sewing. The dark blue wool body of the jacket is free of rips, tears, stains and has no moth damage at all. The blue color is still very vibrant, and contrasts well with the artillery red piping used throughout the jacket. The stitching is still unbroken and pretty tight on this old jacket. All buttons on the jacket are securely attached, and the majority of them have no back mark. Those that do carry the Scovill & Co. Extra back mark. There is one inner pocket in the jacket, sewn into the left side of the lining. The jacket is fully lined, where as most of these found today have had the lining removed. The body of the jacket is lined with the dark brown cotton weave, closely resembling burlap. It is in good condition and has areas of treadle machine and hand stitching. There are some frayed and worn spots in the lining, near the neck and around the sleeve linings. The sleeves are lined with beige cotton muslin material and are securely stitched in place. The right sleeve lining is stamped with the Cincinnati Depot markings and a size 2 stamp. The pillow blocks on the rear of the jacket are securely sewn on, as well as all the other piping. There are a couple of ink stamps on the body of the lining. Each back panel is stamped the same, the letters U.C.I within a rectangle, size and 38. Apparently this one saw some time in the costume department of the UCI company. I have not been able to determine who UCI was, but this is not an uncommon thing. I have had a couple of other pieces of Civil War cloth that were stamped with costume company logos and sizes. Currently there is a French Model 1821Infantry officer's sword with the Western Costume Company mark on the blade in the shop. This is a very nice example of the Model 1855 Artillery Enlisted man's jacket.
