Indian Wars Period Infantry Pioneer Brassard

This is an Infantry Pioneer Brassard authorized from the Indian Wars through the Spanish American War. Pioneers were troops who accompanied wagon trains for the purpose of improving trails, grading stream banks and ravines, clearing obstacles and replacing broken wheels when necessary. That description makes them the forerunners of today's Engineer Sapper, except for the wagon wheel part! The brassard is made of dark blue kersey wool with with a cutout in the shape of crossed hatchets, backed in white wool. It measures 10 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" tall. The pioneer was authorized to wear one brassard on each sleeve. If the enlisted man was a corporal or above, the brassards were worn just below the rank insignia. These are pretty rare and come out of the old Bannerman collection. They would go great on an Indian War or Span Am Pioneer display.
