This is an import Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, also referred to as a Dragoon Heavy Cavalry Saber, used during the Civil War. This import Model 1840 was manufactured by R. Rohrig & Company of Solingen, Germany. The sword measures 40 1/2" overall, with a blade length of 35". The blade is slightly curved with a wide, flat back that measures 1 1/4" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with an integral fuller that measures 27" and a narrow fuller along the false edge measuring 16 1/2" in length. The blade edge has one significant flat spot and a couple of small nicks. The blade has taken on a very dark, almost black patina. Neither the reverse or obverse ricasso is marked. The only stamp is found on the spine of the blade near the guard, that of R&C. The blade has not been sharpened. The brass hilt has a beautiful dark chocolate patina. The original leather washer is missing in action. The wooden grip is not cracked, but is missing all but a couple of small areas of the leather wrap on the bottom side. The double twisted brass wire is only present at the guard and at the pommel cap. The brass pommel cap is also tight to the grip. The peen appears to be unmolested. There is a slight deflection of the guard when handled. The original iron scabbard is not marked or stamped anywhere. It is free of dents. The scabbard has taken on the same dark patina as the sword, and has light surface pitting along the entire length. The drag is integral and shows minor wear, as do the mounts and suspension rings. There is a message written on one side of the scabbard that reads, "Found in a smokehouse at Dry Gap near Knoxville, Tennessee during the early 1950's". That might explain the almost black appearance of the sword and scabbard! There's no way to know if this sword was carried by a Confederate or Union cavalryman, but I'd like to think it was ol' Johnny Reb! Either way, it's a cool piece of history that surfaced just north of Knoxville, Tennessee over 70 years ago.
