This is a nine button officer's frock coat from the Civil War period that was carried over into service in the Indian Wars. The coat is in fantastic good condition, having just a couple of small moth holes in the small of the back. The dark blue wool material has not faded or degraded in any way. The construction of this frock suggests it is a private purchase rather than a government issue. The sleeves do not have the balloon flair at the elbows, but are the same width from the shoulder to the cuff. The skirts measure 21 1/2" in length and are machine hemmed. The collar is 1 7/16" and shows practically no wear. The collar is closed by a single closure hook at the bottom of the collar. A section of polished cotton material has been hand stitched to the inside of the collar for comfort. The front of the single breasted coat has 9 General Service buttons, 4 of them have no back mark and the other five are back marked GOODWINS PAT. JULY 27 1875. All the buttons have the eagle facing right, surrounded by 24 stars. Each non functioning cuff has three General Service buttons, five with no back mark and one back marked GOODWINS PAT. 27 JULY 1875. On the back of the frock are two more General Service buttons, neither are back marked. There is one interior pocket, a vertical one on the inner left breast. There is evidence of a tag sewn into the pocket, but it is no longer with the coat. The vents also have a pocket each. The pockets are lined with brown muslin cotton. The interior of the coat shows more of the quality craftsmanship that went into it. The body of the coat is lined with a black polished cotton. The sleeves are lined with off white cotton ticking with blue and green stripes. The shoulder straps of a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry are hand stitched on the shoulders. All the panel seams are tightly stitched together, and show no signs of hand stitched repairs. The bottom of the coat is machine hemmed. There is not a makers label sewn into the back of the collar. The medium blue wool trousers date from the 1880's - 1890's. They show some serious wear and repair work. Most of the repairs are around the pockets and the crotch area, but there is one large machine sewn repair in the seat of the trousers as well. The trousers have a five button fly that have five tin period buttons still sewn on. The button holes on the placket fly are all hand stitched. There is also a plastic button at the waist closure as well as another tin button to secure the inner waist panel. The front has two slanted pocket and a watch pocket on the right side. There are two pocket on the back of the trousers and an adjustment belt with a two prong buckle stamped Patent 1855 along the waist in the back. There are four tin buttons sewn on the waist panel in the front and two in the back for suspenders. The outer seam of each leg has a 1/8" welt of dark blue wool accent. Together this is an excellent example of an Indian Wars Infantry officer's dress uniform.
