This is a Model 1943 field jacket used by the US Army and Marine Corps during World War II. The M1943 jacket was introduced into the supply system in August 1943 and became a part of the standard combat uniform for the Army and Marine Corps through the end of WWII. The success of the jacket was dependent on the soldier using this jacket as an outer shell against wind and rain in the layering system. It was hip length, loose fitting and designed to provide freedom of movement when as an outer shell over other clothing. They were made of 9 ounce cotton sateen or oxford cloth. The lining is made of 5 ounce cotton poplin. The Model 1943 field jacket was a much welcomed improvement over the Pattern 1941 "Parson's" jacket. This Model 1943 field jacket is in very good condition, but shows plenty of evidence of use. There are no moth holes or stains on the coat, but it does have a couple of small holes here and there. The patch of the 82nd Airborne Division is still securely sewn on the left sleeve, with a cloth 48 star American flag sewn on the right sleeve. All buttons on the jacket are present, but two of them are broken on the front. The Quartermaster tag is still present in the lower right pocket, but is pretty thin! The size tag is the collar is present and shows this jacket to be a 34 Regular. The area of the collar that would be in contact with the wearers neck shows plenty of wear, and the fabric is split open in that area. There is also fraying at both cuff edges. There is an ink stamp in four places inside the jacket that identify the former owner as W.G. MARR/0-435323. The 0 denotes a serial number for an officer, so there is some research to be done here! This Model 1943 field jacket definitely has the look of having been there and done that, and will make a fine addition to your WWII 82nd Airborne collection!
