This is a World War II German Kriegsmarine Non Commissioned Officer's dagger with scabbard. The Kriegsmarine was the last of the three branches of the German Wehrmacht to adopt a dagger with the national eagle and swastika emblem, doing so on 28 January, 1938. Dress regulations required officers and senior NCO's to wear side arms, including daggers, as a component of particular forms of dress. This is a very interesting example of a Kriegsmarine NCO's dagger. It has a bright, nickel plate blade that shows no blemishes. The blade has never been sharpened, the fullers are clean and crisp and there is no wear to the runners. The edges are very crisp with no nicks or dings, and the needle sharp point tip is intact. The small throat washer is still intact and present. The blade has a notch provisioned for a locking device on the scabbard. There are no makers marks found on either ricasso. The pommel cap is a dark gray casting, with traces of gold wash present in the recessed areas. The detail on the front and reverse of the eagle is amazing! The wing feathers are represented by flat, tapered sections and scalloped shoulders. The neck and breast areas are enhanced by cross hatching. The wreath displays prominently, with traces of gold wash still adhering to the canted swastika. The crossguard is the standard Kriegsmarine (Navy) type, straight across with an aged golden patina. The ivory colored grip is in perfect condition, with the wire wrap still very tight to the grip. The scabbard is undamaged, no dents, scratches or blemishes to be found. It is stamped with the lightning bolt pattern and palmettes. The mounts for the suspension rings have very detailed overlapping oak leaves with acorns. The rings themselves have been soldered to the mounts. The throat is retained by a single flat head screw. While the blade has been provisioned for a locking device, no such device exists on the scabbard. The scabbard body is nickel plated, and has no trace of gold wash left on it. It is possible that this scabbard is not original to the dagger. While they may not be original to each other, they certainly display very well together. This is a very fine example of a WWII German NCO Naval dagger.
