This is a German WWII K98 Bayonet with scabbard, frog and portepee. This bayonet, serial number 244, has the matching serial numbered scabbard and is in good condition. The bayonet retains the majority of its original dark bluing, missing only along the cutting edge and at the point. It appears that this one was sharpened long ago. The bayonet release button is functional. The reverse upper pommel edge contains the two Waffen Amt markings being the open winged eagle over the number 214. The grip plates are the bakelite style having the red maroon color with minimal wear. The plates are retained by spanner and screw hardware. The guard edges remain crisp, while the surfaces are smooth. The obverse ricasso of the bayonet is stamped 244 while the reverse ricasso is stamped with the makers name, GEBR. HELLER The spine of the blade is stamped 38, indicating a production year of 1838. The scabbard is straight with one small dent towards the bottom. The blued finish on the scabbard has minor age wear. The upper obverse side is stamped 244, while the reverse upper side is stamped GEBR. HELLER/1938. The reverse side of the scabbard ball is matching Waffen Amt stamped with the open winged eagle over the number 214. The scabbard throat is retained by a single side screw. Rounding out the bayonet is the portepee, which is in very good condition. The mortise for the bayonet lug has red felt inserted into it, to complete the dress appearance of the bayonet. This bayonet with scabbard, frog and portepee is a clean and honest example for your 98K rifle, without ever needing to upgrade.
