This is a Marine Corps Forest Green kersey wool winter dress jacket. This one is identified to a Corporal W. K. Blythe. The jacket has the patch of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing patch sewn on the left sleeve. The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing was commissioned 10 July, 1941, at San Diego, California. The first subordinate command of the wing was Marine Air Group Two, based at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, Hawaii. During WWII the 2nd Marine Air Wing participated in 83 combat operations throughout the South Pacific, to include Wake Island, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Okinawa. The 2nd Air Wing is still active and currently stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. The Marine that wore this uniform was a Corporal, these insignia being WWII era. The Eagle, Globe and Anchor insignia are also WWII era. In the right sleeve opening is an ink stamp that reads W.K. BLYTHE. The left sleeve opening again has the ink stamp of W.K. BLYTHE, and below that is a green stamp that reads QUARTERMASTER DEPT. US MARINE CORPS 1941 - 1942. There are no service stripes on the sleeves, indicating less than 4 years of service. All the buttons on the uniform are back marked SCOVILLE MFG CO WATERBURY. This one still has the cloth belt it came with. Most Marines chose to wear the cordovan colored leather service belt with it anyway. Corporal Blythe's jacket still has his ribbons on it, and include the Navy Presidential Unit Citation with one bronze star, Navy Unit Commendation, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign ribbon with three bronze stars and the WWII Victory medal. This is a very nice condition jacket that would look good in any WWII Marine collection, especially an Air Wing display.
