This is a copy of an oil on canvas painting of General John "Black Jack" Pershing in a gold rectangular wooden frame. The original painting was done in July of 1938 by John Doctoroff at his studio in Chicago. The image is 13 1/2" high by 10 1/2" wide. Pershing is dressed in his 1918 dress tunic with Sam Brown belt. His epaulettes have the four stars of an American General. There is only one ribbon above his left pocket, the Distinguished Service Medal. For whatever reason, Pershing ordered the artist to remove all other ribbons from his painting except for this one. Pershing was a career military officer, serving from 1886 - 1924. He saw action and commanded troops in the Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippine American War, Russo-Japanese War, Mexican Revolution, and was the Commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. In 1919 Congress create the rank of General of the Armies of the United States, just for Pershing. John J Pershing died on 15 July, 1948 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the men he commanded during WWI. If you have a WWI collection, you just gotta have the commander of all the American forces who fought in France!
