Cavalry Tactics Manual Identified to Captain Thomas J Pattin 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry

This is a Cavalry tactics manual used by Captain Thomas J Pattin of Company L, 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. This manual is Volume 1 for Cavalry Tactics used by the Army and Volunteers of the United States, written by Brigadier General Phillip St. George Cooke and printed in 1862. General Cooke was the father in law of another pretty famous cavalry general, JEB Stuart. The hard bound field sized manual is 217 pages in length, and covers formations, individual movements on horse and dismounted, operating as a platoon and operating as a squadron among many others. Many black and white pencil illustrations accompany the text. On the inside front page of the manual are several pencil inscriptions. At the top in cursive pencil is Capt T. J. Pattin/Co L 1st OV Cavalry. At the bottom of the page , again in cursive pencil is Promoted Major, 31 Dec 62/" Lt. Col. 20 Sep 63/mustered out w/Regt. 25 Nov 64. The Civil War Database support the dates of enlistment and promotions of Thomas Pattin. The 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment saw service in both theaters, with companies A and C fighting in the Eastern theater, and the remainder of the regiment saw action at the Siege of Corinth, Battle of Perryville, Battle of Stones River, the Tullahoma Campaign, Battle of Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the Siege of Atlanta, Battle of Jonesboro and Battle of Lovejoy's Station. Major Pattin was commanding the regiment at the battle of Chickamauga. The manual is in exceptional condition to be 159 years old, and a field manual on top of the age! If you collect Civil War manuals and books you should not pass this one up!
