This is a US Model 1895 officer's undress blouse worn by the US Army during the Spanish American War. The blouse has been identified to Captain Thomas R Biddle of Company C, 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This blouse came in two versions, the Fall/Winter/Spring version that was made of dark blue wool with a polished black cotton lining, and a Summer Tropics version made of white cotton duct material with a white cotton lining. This is obviously the dark blue wool version. The blouse is trimmed in 1 1/4" mohair braid on the collar, the edge of the blouse and the split side seam. Eight black hard plastic buttons are sewn onto a hidden fly. These buttons, along with a single hook and loop in the collar and at the bottom of the blouse opening keep the front of the blouse closed. The coat is lined in polished black cotton fabric and has two inner pockets. The sleeves are lined with a striped cotton tick material. The shoulder boards of a Captain are sewn onto each shoulder, being made of false bullion material. The right sleeve lining is marked T R Biddle in cursive ink. The makers label of The M.C. LILLEY & Co. is sewn on the inside collar. The blouse is in good condition, having one hole on the back of the right shoulder area and several small holes, the pictures show them. Fold 3 shows that Thomas R Biddle was commissioned a Captain on 9 May, 1898 and placed in command of Company C, 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The 4th was sent to Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War by way of Camp Thomas, located on the old Civil War battlefield of Chickamauga, Georgia. It arrived there on 16 May, and remained in camp until 22 July, when it began the move to Newport News, Virginia. On 28 July the 4th OVI was on board the USS St Paul bound for the island of Puerto Rico. The 4th Ohio saw limited combat on Puerto Rico, but was involved in the taking of the town of Guayama on 4 August, 1898. Hostilities ended on 12 August before the 4th was involved in any more combat. Captain Biddle's records show that he discharged on 26 August, 1898 under a special order. This undress blouse is another very good example of the uniform worn by US soldiers during the Spanish American war.
