This is a Pattern 1857 US cartridge box used by the Union army during the Civil War. The box is a good example of an 1857 issue box made for the .69 caliber cartridge used early in the war. The closure tab and roller buckles are sewn to the box, the belt loops and sewn and riveted. This box has no sling. The front shows some moderate crazing. All stitching is still very strong and tight. The box does not have a makers stamp or inspectors stamp on it. A pattern 1839 US cartridge box plate is attached to the outer flap. The plate shows are deep chocolate patina. Only one of the roller buckles for the shoulder sling is present, the leather securing the missing buckle is torn. Both belt loops are still present and are securely attached to the box. The inner flap for the implement pouch, the brass finial and both cartridge box tins are still present and in strong condition. The latch tab for the outer flap is present and securely attached. This Pattern 1857 cartridge box for .69 caliber ammunition is a pretty nice example of a Union issued cartridge box used during the Civil War.
