This is a non excavated Alabama Volunteer Corps officers button from the Civil War period. The button is of a two piece design, measures 23mm and is back marked D EVANS & Co/ATTLEBORO MASS. The face of the button features an eagle with raised wings, a military style shield on the chest, a laurel branch in the left talon and three arrows in the right talon. The lined letters A.V.C. are above the eagle, between the wings, all on a plain field. Almost all of the gilt remains on the button, giving it a mellow golden patina. The shank is still reporting for duty, but is leaning to the side. This button is represented as AB 2 in Albert's book on page 113. These buttons are pretty rare, and were used on Alabama Volunteer Corps officer uniforms early in the war. If you collect Civil War buttons you better give this one a hard look, it will make a nice addition to your Confederate button collection!
