This is a saddle girth strap from the Civil War period. It measures 46" long and 2 1/2" wide. The body of the strap is made of leather. On each end of the strap are two buckles, originally sewn onto individual leather pieces, that were in turn sewn onto the strap. The leather pieces support the buckles used to attached the girth to the cinch straps of the saddle. Three of the four buckle straps have been replaced, one being resewn and the other two attached by copper rivets. The girth strap is a little dry, but all in all is in good condition. This is a civilian girth strap, and will not work on a McClellan saddle.
