This is a US Army M3A1 diaphragm gas mask with carrier from World War II. The M3a1 mask is essentially the same as the M3, the difference being an update plastic voice mitter box and exhaust valve to replace the earlier metal pieces. These A1 versions of the M3 were used in 1942 and 1943. They were issued to all ground personnel, as the Allied forces were concerned that Germany may well use chemical warfare like they did in World War I. The mask is made up of a plastic face piece, adjustable elastic strap head harness, clear hard plastic lenses, flexible hose and a filter. These components, along with dimming stick and lense cloth were carried inside the M1VA1 carrier. This mask and carrier have been designated for training use, and the filter is no longer with the mask. The M3A1 mask is in very good condition, with the rubber and elastic components still very pliable. The carrier is also in very good condition, with all stitching, snaps, fasteners, harnesses and buckles present and serviceable. The mask was manufactured by the General Tire & Rubber Company in April, 1942. The carrier has been stenciled to show that it was intended for training use only. This gas mask and carrier will look great in your early WWII American collection.
