This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 70180 puts this one in the production year of 1857. The 7 1/2" barrel has visible but worn rifling and a dark bore. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA address is still visible. The Colt patent mark is no longer legible, nor is the cylinder scene. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, with the exception of the loading lever. It is stamped 8247, and appears to be a period replacement. The gun has an overall dark plum patina, with the loading lever being a little lighter. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. There are no traces of the original silver wash visible on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium chocolate patina that is very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have none of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, are not cartouched and have no repairs. This old revolver could have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. The flap holster is for the Colt 1860 Army revolver, but this 1851 Navy has been in it forever! The leather is still soft and supple and has no tears or rips. The original stitching is still strong and unbroken. The closure strap is not torn or missing and is securely sewn onto the flap. The brass finial is tight to the body of the holster. The plug in the toe of the holster is still reporting for duty and is securely attached. The large belt loop on the back is securely attached as well. There is no cartouche or makers mark visible. The leather is crazed, but has very little finish loss. The wide belt loop is securely attached to the body of the holster. The really unique aspect of this holster is that it's left handed. Not to many of these are floating around out there today. This old warhorse of the Union Army has seen it's fair share of service, but it still displays well. It would compliment any collection! Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection, or your Colt revolver collection.
