This is a no regulation tarred canvas haversack from the Civil War period. This haversack is nearly identical to the standard Model 1851 haversack issued to Union troops during the war. The only difference is this one does not have the the buttons sewn into the interior to secure the interior cotton bag. More so, there are no indications that the haversack ever had them. This one is made of canvas material. It measures approximately 10" wide and 12 1/2" high. The canvas sling measures 38" in length. The outer flap is secured to the body of the haversack by a strap and buckle. The small roller buckle is securely attached to body of the haversack, unfortunately the closure strap is broken. This one has been tarred, a common practice with both sides during the war. They did this to water proof their cloth items, which were scarce. This rare and well preserved haversack is in very good condition. All stitching is still very strong and unbroken. The shoulder strap is securely attached to the body of the haversack. The outer flap is sewn on with double row stitching, again still very strong and unbroken. There is one small hole on the back of the haversack, near the top. There is one area where the haversack has been repaired, a hole sewn shut on the bottom of the haversack. This one has survived so well that it could still be used today. It would certainly look great decked out on your Civil War mannequin!
