This is a US Model 1917A1 helmet manufactured by the McCord Radiator Company between 1936 and 1941. Commonly referred to as the "Kelly" between 1932 and 1936, M1917 and British Mk1 helmets in the United States were refurbished and modified with a new leather liner and web chin strap. In 1936 a new helmet was produced by the McCord Radiator Company. These helmets were stamped with a one or two digit number and a single letter on the bottom side of the rim. This particular helmet is stamped 4B. In all, around 900,000 of these M1917A1 helmets were produced by McCord, most of them in 1941. These pre WWII helmets were worn at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack, also at Wake Island, Guam and the Philippine Islands. The liner is 100% intact, as well as the web chin strap. There are plenty of photographs of early war American soldiers wearing these helmets until the M1 helmet replaced them. If you have an American helmet collection, it's not complete without one of these!
