This is a patch made for the Reconnaissance Team Kentucky of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observation Group during the Vietnam war. MACV-SOG was activated on 24 January, 1964. Their mission was to function as a joint special operations task force as a subcomponent of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam. By 1967 MACV-SOG was commanded by a Special Forces Colonel, and was broken down into three areas of operation, Command & Control North, Central and South. Recon Team Kentucky fell under operational control of Command & Control Central. CCC was based out of Kontum and operated in southern Laos and northern Cambodia. This patch is considered to be a second generation RT Kentucky patch. It was designed in January, 1971 by Steven Hatch and John Roberts. The patch was worn on the breast pocket of the utility uniform. This RT Kentucky patch measures 4 1/4" at the highest point and 4 1/4" at the widest point. It is fully machined embroidered, and features the knight chess piece with a Kentucky long rifle in the center, the word RECON behind the chess piece and the American flag running diagonally from the upper left to the bottom right. Below the chess piece is a banner with RT KENTUCKY on it. The knights piece represents the Kentucky Derby, the long rifle the state of Kentucky. The patch is in very good condition, and looks to have never been sewn on a uniform. This would lok great in any Vietnam era special operations collection or display.
