US Model 1858 Infantry Hat Insignia
Item #: WR642

This is a US Infantry insignia adopted in 1858 for use with the Model 1858 Hardee hat. The horn was chosen to represent the Infantry branch and was to be worn on the front of the Hardee hat, along with a letter and number to represent the soldier's company and regiment. This horn measures 3 1/2" across and 1 3/4 at the highest point. There are two wire loops soldered to the back of the insignia to secure it to the hat. Soldier's usually used a leather thong to secure the horn to the hat. While it was never authorized, many Union soldiers worn them on their forage caps. This one has an aged patina, but doesn't look to have ever been on a hat. It displays well on it's own, but would really make your Hardee hat pop!
