This is a Model 1918 style winter uniform circa 1924. The 1918 tunic is made from high quality wool material. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the bright US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The coat buttons are all back marked "J.R. GAUNT & SON. INC. NEW YORK" on the outer ring and "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the inner ring. The smaller buttons are all back marked "GAUNT N.Y. MADE IN ENGLAND". The coat is fully lined and has an inner pocket on the left side. There is no makers label found on the tunic. The left sleeve has a 29th Infantry Division patch sewn on. Above the left sleeve cuff are two bullion chevrons, indicating one year of overseas service. The collar disc are the bright version brought into service in 1924. The left disc is the crossed rifles of the Infantry, with the regimental number 116 above and the letter D below. This represents Company D, 116th Infantry Regiment, of the 29th Infantry Division. This unit gained great fame on June 6th, 1944 on Omaha beach. The right collar disc is the US, with the smaller letters VA imposed over them. The 29th Division was and still is a National Guard unit. There are no holes on the tunic, just one large frayed area on the pants on the right front near the knee area. There are a couple of machine sewn repairs to the pants. Written in ink on the lining of the right sleeve of the tunic is BUGLER/O. ANDERS/Co. F 17th Inf/Camp Meade/Md. I found this after photographing the uniform, but can provide a picture of it if requested. This will make an interesting project for those with the time and resources available. Regardless, this is a unique transitional uniform going from the WWI era into the WWII time period!
