This is a Sharps Model "1857" carbine from the pre Civil War period. The 21 5/8" barrel retains the majority of the original brown finish, with the remainder having a steel and plum patina. The bore is in excellent condition, with the original rifling being worn but showing no pitting. A bore gauge shows the barrel is now .54 caliber. There are no visible proof marks on the left barrel flat by the breech. The breech and receiver share the same dull steel gray patina. The saddle bar and ring are present with the ring appearing to be a replacement. The wood is a beautiful medium brown forearm and a darker chocolate brown stock. The stock has a couple of minute dings and nicks from normal handling. There is the tell tell signs of field use on the left side of the stock, as the wear pattern of a sling can be seen in the wood. There are no cartouches visible on the stock. There are no cracks in the wood anywhere. The barrel band, patch box and butt plate are brass. All three have a matching soft golden patina. The barrel is stamped is three lines, SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG CO/HARTFORD CONN. The right side of the receiver is stamped SHARP'S/PATENT/1853 behind the hammer. The left side of the receiver is not stamped. The breechblock is not stamped. The barrel and receiver are both marked with the serial number 22376, and the tang is stamped SHARP'S/PATENT/1848. The mechanics of the carbine operate flawlessly. The cover for the pellet primer system is missing, the only flaw with the entire weapon. This model of carbine is actually a late Model 1853 with the short sling bar and rear sight first used on the New Model 1859. Not an official model of Sharp's carbine, it has picked up the Model "1857" from the collecting community. This one has survived in fantastic condition and is a very shootable gun. It will enhance any carbine collection.
