This is an excavated 12 pound cannonball recovered from Kingsport, Tennessee. The ball is a nominal 4.45" in diameter and weighs 12 pounds. It was excavated off Fort Robinson Dr. in Kingsport, almost in the center of where the Confederate camp was. It has not been stabilized to prevent any further deterioration, and shows plenty of rust, scale and ground action. This one remains the way it came out of the ground! The Battle of Kingsport was fought along the Holston River near the Rotherwood Mansion in Kingsport, Tennessee on 13 and 14 December, 1864. Over 5000 Union forces were under the command of Major General George Stoneman. Approximately 500 Confederates were commanded by Colonel Richard Morgan. Morgan held the larger Union force in check on the western side of the Holston River for almost two days, but was out flanked by a Union cavalry force under the command of Colonel Samuel Patton on the second day of fighting. I believe that this is a Union cannonball, but am not 100 % certain. It needs to be cleaned and conserved to determine if it is Confederate or Union. This one was discovered in what would have been the middle of the Confederate camp. I don't believe it was fired, but as probably dropped and left unnoticed. Either way, this is a great opportunity to pick up a piece from the Battle of Kingsport, and believe me, they are few and far between!
