This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 47283 puts this one in the production year of 1856. The 7 1/2" barrel has been cut down to 6 1/8" and needs a good cleaning, with a dirty bore and visible rifling. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK CITY address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is worn, with Colt being worn off and only ENT still being visible. The cylinder scene is completely gone. The serial numbers are still pretty crisp and match, with the exception of the wedge. It is unmarked but appears to be a period replacement. The gun has an overall steel gray patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. All of the original silver wash is gone on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium golden patina that is very eye pleasing. On the bottom of the back strap the letters U.S.N. have been stamped, acceptance stamp of the Union Navy during the Civil War. The walnut grips have the very little of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, have no repairs and are double cartouched. While the barrel length of this one is not standard, I'm confident it was shortened during the war period. It will make a nice addition to your Colt pistol or Civil War naval collection.
