This is a Model 1873 Winchester rifle chambered in .38-40 Winchester Center Fire. The Model 1873 was one of the most popular Winchester lever action guns produced, with a total production of 720,609. The Model 73 was designed by John Browning, and was produced in three variations, the carbine, rifle and musket. This Model 1873 Winchester is serial number 204759B, putting it in a production year of 1886. The rifle measures 43 1/4" overall, with a 24" round barrel. The barrel and magazine tube still retain quite a bit of the original finish, the same holds true of the receiver, lever and hammer. The butt plate has a steel gray patina. The bore is bright and shows good rifling. The barrel has several stamps, 38 W.C.F. is stamped just forward of the breech. Forward of the rear sight on the top the barrel is stamped in two lines: WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED -MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860. The tang stamp is covered by an adjustable sight that has been added to the gun. The crescent shaped steel butt plate fits the stock like a glove, and matches the remainder of the case hardened hardware in appearance. The exact same hold true for the steel nose cap. The walnut stock is in very good condition, with no stress cracks or wood loss anywhere. The barrel channel edges show wear from handling, but are still very crisp. The mechanics of this old Winchester operate flawlessly. Pretty sure this old Winchester centerfire lever gun will still put some lead down range! This Model 1873 Winchester will definitely add to your wild west or Indian Wars collection.
