This is a type written letter from Rear Admiral Archibald H. Scales, Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy, to Rear Admiral James H. Glennon. Glennon was at the time the Commandant of the Third Naval District headquartered at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The content of the letter pertains to one of Admiral Glennon's sons taking a position at the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. The superintendent states that he has received Glennon's letter of the 24th requesting a possible appointment of his son at the academy, and also states his name was on a list of possible candidates for the position put out by the Bureau of Navigation. Admiral Scales only concern is the lack of available housing for the incoming officer is his "rather large family". The number of available quarters on the academy grounds was limited and no less than an officer of Commander rank would stand much of a chance getting them. Scales goes on to state the availability of quarters outside the academy was not a good situation either. He says he will insist on the son's appointment if Glennon desires. Sounds like a case of two career Navy officers taking care of one another. Scales served in the Navy from 1895 until his retirement in 1926. During WWI he commanded the battleship USS Delaware. Glennon served in the Navy from 1874 until his retirement in 1921. He commanded Squadron One, Battleship Force, Atlantic Fleet aboard his flagship the USS Missouri. The letter is typed on official United States Naval Academy stationary and is dated 27 May, 1919. The document remains in very good condition, with only one small tear in the paper. This little document would look great displayed in a frame with your WWI US Navy collection.
