Identified WWI US Model 1917 Tunic 3rd Infantry Division

This is a US Model 1917 tunic worn by the US Army during World War I. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the subdued US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The coat size buttons are not back marked. The smaller buttons are all back marked "CITY BUTTON WORKS NY". The coat is fully lined and has one inner pocket. Written in ink below the collar is JNO LAMONTIA. Also written in ink is a second name, along with the full service number of H.W. RENFRO/3310013 along the edge of the right side lining. The left sleeve has a theater made 3rd Division patch sewn on. A red discharge stripe is sewn on below the 3rd Division patch. Above the left sleeve trim are two gold chevrons of bullion, indicating one year of overseas service. The right sleeve has the rank insignia of a Corporal sewn on it. The left collar disc is the crossed rifles of the Infantry. The right disc is the standard US. There are no medals, ribbons or qualification badges pinned above the left breast pocket. There are no holes, tears , rips or stains anywhere on the tunic. There is a quartermasters tag sewn on the inside of the lining, it reads " NEW YORK DEPOT/Q.M.C. U.S.A./MARK COWEN/NEW YORK/CONTRACT APRIL 1917/SPECIFICATION NO. 1160 with a legible inspector's stamp on it. Tony Lamontia was born on 6 November, 1891 in Termine Mares, Sicily. He immigrated to the United States in 1910 and settled in Bolivar, Pennsylvania. He joined the Army on 16 October, 1917 and was initially assigned to and served with Company D, 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division until 19 December, 1917. Lamontia was then assigned to Company G, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division 20 December, 1917 until 29 December, 1918. His final assignment would be with Company F, 53rd Pioneer Infantry Regiment, a non divisional unit. A veteran's compensation application shows that Lamontia was in the 2nd Battle of the Marne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse Argonne. He is shown severely wounded on 24 July, 1918, during the 2nd Battle of the Marne. He was promoted to Corporal on 6 December, 1918 just before his transfer to the 53rd Pioneer Infantry. Corporal Lamontia was discharged from the US Army on 20 May, 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Anthony (Tony) Lamontia returned to Bolivar, Pennsylvania where he owned a grocery and produce store. He passed away on 13 May, 1977 at the age of 85. This is a very nice example of a Model 1917 winter tunic worn by a member of Company G, 30th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division, the Rock of the Marne! It will look great on a mannequin and really enhance your WWI collection!
