This is a US Fifth Army patch from the pre World War II period. The patch measures 2 7/8" wide and 2 3/4" high. The patch is a pentagon shape with five red stars on a white back ground with no border. This first version of the Fifth Army patch was submitted for approval on 8 September, 1926. The five stars and shape of the patch suggest the number of the unit. The Fifth Army was activated on 5 January, 1943. The commanding officer of the Fifth Army, LTG Mark Clark, requested a new design for the patch in February, 1943. He wanted the patch to represent the area of the world where Fifth Army served. Clark's Fifth Army was credited with the Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, the North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. The one piece patch is all machine sewn. There is no moth damage on the patch at all. I do not believe this patch has ever been sewn on a uniform. If you have a patch collection your gonna need one of these to complete it.
