This is a German identification tag, known as a "dog tag", from World War II. These tags were used to positively identify the soldier when he was killed, and to verify his identity if his body were ever to be exhumed. The German dog tag was made in two sections, each containing identical information. If the soldier were killed, the top section remained with the body while the lower half was turned into the unit headquarters. This oval shaped tag is made of aluminum, with Pz. Abw. ERS. KP. 207 with 23 and A stamped below that. This stamp represents Panzer Abwehr (anti tank) Ersatz (replacement) Kompany (company) 207, the soldier's roster number of 23 and blood type of A. The leather pouch that accompanies the dog tag remains in solid condition, and looks to have never been used. It has a four leaf clover stamped into the front of it. The neck cord is missing from the pouch. This identification tag and pouch are in very good condition. This set will look great in your WWII German personal effects display.
